'Back To The Future' co-creator reveals how Marty and Doc became friends

The co-creator of Back To The Future, Bob Gale, has finally laid to rest a question that has been raised by film fans for year: How did Doc Brown and Marty McFly become friends? During an internet discussion about the origin of the characters' friendship, the co-writer of the classic sci-fi adventure weighed in with the final word.

Posting on Mental Floss, Gale explained the backstory he and Robert Zemeckis came up with:

For years, Marty was told that Doc Brown was dangerous, a crackpot, a lunatic. Marty snuck into Doc's lab, and was fascinated by all the cool stuff that was there. When Doc found him there, he was delighted to find that Marty thought he was cool and accepted him for what he was.

From there Gale explains that Doc gave Marty a part-time job helping out around the house, feeding Einstein and the rest, as they say, is history.Due to the time travel aspect of the film, theories about just how the Back To The Future pair became pals have included the idea that Doc made friends with Marty knowing that he would eventually help him out in 1955.

It's safe to say, the more you go down this route of thinking the more your brain will hurt.

Last year saw the 25-year anniversary of theSteven Spielberg-produced family adventure classic. The trilogy is available to buy on Blu-ray.
