Gary Barlow pledges to bring 'crediblility' to 'The X Factor'

The X Factor returns tonight (August 20), and new head judge, Take That's Gary Barlowhas pledged to bring the show his brand of 'credibility'.

Barlow heads a new line-up alongside Kelly Rowland, Tulisa Contostavlos and show veteran Louis Walsh. But rows have apparently already erupted over the man-band leader's mission to bring his own brand of musical conservatism to the show.

Barlow told The Sun:
The TV companies are always going to push for the ridiculous acts to get through, but I’m hoping we can resist so many this year. I know it’s Saturday night entertainment and people want something to love to hate and to laugh at. We’ll see if it's possible [to axe the oddballs]. I'll let you know.

Barlow is apparently at odds with show boss Simon Cowell, who has achieved ratings of 20 million thanks to ‘eccentric’ acts such as Jedward and Wagner.

He is also backing the campaign to 'clean up' The X Factor after complaints last year about sexualised performances by Rihanna and Christina Aguilera:
When I was watching - and I have a ten and an eight-year-old watching it - theChristina Aguilera stuff was too much for me.

The X Factor airs tonight at 8pm on ITV1.
