'Glee 3D' makes disappointing opening at US Box Office

Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, has flopped at the US box office failing to make the top 10. 'Gleeks', as fans of the show are dubbed, failed to turn out to cinemas in the US with the series first big screen outing taking in under $6 million (£3.7 million) on over 2,000 3D screens.

While the film had a very small budget of approximately $9 million (£5.6 million), and will make further profit from DVD sales, the figures are disappointing for 20th Century Foxas well as the cast and crew who would have hoped for further silver screen visits.

Other concert movies of its type, including Hannah Montana and Justin Bieber, grossed approximately $30 million (£18 million) on their opening, while the Jonas Brothers movie made over $12 million (£7.3 million) on its initial weekend.

Elsewhere in the US charts, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes held onto the Number One slot taking in a further $27.5 million (£17 million), bringing its total so far to over $100 million (£61 million).

New releases in the top five included comedy 30 Minutes or Less, horror Final Destination 5 and Oscar-hopeful The Help, starring Emma Stone.

Next week sees the release of the Anne Hathaway romantic comedy, One Day, as well as two remakes in the form of Fright Night and Conan the Barbarian.

Glee: The 3D Concert Movie opens in the UK on Friday (Aug 19).
